Interfaith Leadership Initiatives

Harnessing Religious Authority and Leadership for Peacebuilding and Understanding

Our Imperative

In a world increasingly fractured by religious and ethnic tensions, the events of October 7, 2023, and their aftermath have starkly demonstrated how religious narratives can be weaponized to justify unconscionable violence. Yet even within this darkness lies an opportunity: the power to harness religious teachings as a force for healing and transformation.

While political agreements can establish formal peace, they cannot alone forge the bonds of understanding between peoples. When conflicts are rooted in religious conviction and justified through sacred texts, their resolution must come from within faith traditions themselves, guided by religious leaders committed to peace and human dignity.

Our Vision in Action

We believe that the ethical foundations shared by the Abrahamic faiths—Judaism, Islam, and Christianity—offer a powerful pathway to mutual understanding. Our work centers on two groundbreaking initiatives that translate these shared values into practical action:

The Forum for Interfaith Leaders in Israel: A Proven Model

Through a pioneering partnership between Israel’s Ministry of Interior and Beit Morasha, the Forum has created a dynamic network of 100 religious leaders, primarily from Israel’s “mixed” cities, representing all faiths and sectors in Israel. These leaders share an unwavering commitment to nonviolence and interfaith cooperation.

The Forum’s distinctive approach combines learning and dialogue with practical action. At its foundation are leadership activities that equip interfaith leaders with tools for community engagement and conflict transformation. This leads to the establishment of local task forces throughout Israel, particularly in mixed cities and communities, where these interfaith leaders implement both preventive programs and rapid response interventions during times of tension.

The impact of this work extends far beyond individual communities. As these interfaith coalitions grow and strengthen, they create a powerful network of interfaith leaders who can act swiftly and effectively when challenges arise. Together, they form a respected unified voice that consistently promotes peace and firmly denounces violence, demonstrating how religious authority can be a powerful force for positive change in society.

Building on the Forum’s success, the Global Congress has been established as an unprecedented international effort. The Congress operates simultaneously on two critical and interconnected levels: theological innovation and practical implementation.

At its theological core, the Congress aims to pioneer a new paradigm that bridges ancient wisdom with contemporary needs. Religious scholars and leaders from around the world will gather in dedicated research hubs to study sacred texts collaboratively, discovering shared spiritual heritage and common ground. Through this deep engagement, they will develop fresh interpretations that emphasize our shared values and mutual respect. This work will culminate in the creation of a comprehensive interfaith ethical code that speaks to today’s challenges while honoring our ancient traditions.

The Congress will transform these theological insights into concrete action through a sophisticated implementation strategy. Educational programs and training materials, sensitively adapted for different cultural contexts, will bring these shared ethical principles to religious leaders, educators, and community activists worldwide. A network of specialized task forces will provide crisis mediation and conflict resolution services, while digital platforms will extend our global reach and impact.

Areas of Critical Focus

The Congress is establishing frameworks to address the most pressing challenges at the intersection of faith and modern society. Our scholars and leaders will examine how traditional faith values can meaningfully engage with contemporary issues, exploring the universal concept of sanctity of life across religious traditions. They will develop sophisticated frameworks for religious tolerance that honor both deep faith commitments and humanistic values. Through careful study and dialogue, we will develop new methodologies for sacred text interpretation that promote understanding rather than division. Most crucially, this theological paradigm will address religious extremism through thoughtful, moderate religious discourse that remains true to our traditions while promoting peace.

A Growing Global Partnership

Through collaboration with influential faith leaders worldwide, the foundation for this ambitious initiative is already taking shape through strong international partnerships. Under the auspices of Beit HaNassi (Office of the President of Israel), the Congress has already brought together leading institutions including Beit Morasha, the Centre d’études et de recherches sur le droit et la culture hébraïque au Maroc, the World Sephardi Federation and the Canadian Sephardi Federation. Each partner brings unique perspectives and capabilities to this emerging global network for change.
